Overview
Independent Studies
What is Short-Term Independent Study?
Short-Term Independent Study (STIS) is a program available to all MVUSD students who will miss school due to planned or unplanned absences. It provides students the opportunity to stay on track academically and allows absences to be counted as Independent Study complete once assignments are finished.
Who is Eligible?
- All MVUSD students
- Students with an absence of 1–15 school days
- Students with multiple STIS contracts throughout the school year (as long as the total number of days does not exceed 15)
Why consider STIS?
- Helps students stay caught up academically
- Prevents absences from negatively impacting attendance records
- Supports student engagement and routine during time away
Short-Term Independent Study Updates for Families |
There have been some changes this school year to ISP that we want to ensure everyone is aware of. Also, beginning October 5th, 2026, MVUSD students in grades TK-8 will be able to complete short term independent studies via online modules through Schools PLP.
Updates to Short-Term Independent Study
Effective August 12, 2026, Moreno Valley Unified School District updated its Short-Term Independent Study (STIS) procedures to ensure compliance with attendance auditing standards. School sites can no longer retroactively issue STIS agreements for past absences. To assist families, agreements may now be initiated on the date of absence by contacting the school site's attendance office via phone, email, or ParentSquare. It is recommended Master Agreements are signed within 7 days after the student’s absence although they may be signed throughout the school year, which can be signed physically at the school site or digitally via Informed K12.
Short-Term Independent Study and Schools PLP
This guide provides step-by-step instructions and site links to assist students and families in accessing and completing required daily coursework.
Step 1: Student Logs in to their ClassLink Account
Students and families will need to log in to their MVUSD Device and open up their ClassLink account.

Next you will need to find the Schools PLP Icon shown below. Click on the Icon.

Step 2: Navigating the Student Dashboard
- Once a student logs in to their school site portal, they must select the Short-Term Independent Study course in which they are currently enrolled.
- This action will navigate them directly to their personalized student dashboard.
- Clicking the “Go!” button will prompt the student to begin their coursework for the day.

Step 3: Completing Daily Curriculum & Lessons
The assigned course provides a review of key academic subjects covered in standard grade-level instruction:
- English / Language Arts
- Mathematics
- Science
- Social Studies
Important Lesson Lock & Order Rules:
- Students are required to complete all four lessons assigned for the day prior to marking the day as complete.
- Lessons must be completed in sequential order. Sub-lessons remain locked (indicated by a lock icon) until the prior activity is completed.
- Note: Specific daily lesson counts and subject topics are subject to minor changes based on school site and grade-level requirements.

Step 4: Attendance Verification & Submitting Completed Days
-
Once all assigned lessons for a day are fully completed, the student will receive a prompt to Mark the Day as Complete.
- Submitting this action automatically sends an electronic notification to the school site Attendance Office to log and record the student's attendance for that date.
- If additional independent study days remain, subsequent days of work will become unlocked and accessible on the student dashboard.
- Students cannot move forward to future days until all lessons for prior days are completed and marked complete.

Program Completion Notice: Once all assigned days and coursework activities have been successfully finished and submitted, no remaining days or activities will appear on the student dashboard.
Step 5: Technology & Device Options for Grades TK-2
For families whose students do not have Chromebooks, the following options are available:
- Access SchoolsPLP via any personal device using the school site URL.
- Check out a Chromebook from their class or library (available at some sites).
- Visit the district office technology department to fill out an opt-in home Chromebook request for the rest of the year. (Grades TK-2 only)
- Request a paper SchoolsPLP packet from your student's school site.
